We are visiting the „Women of Kamb” today, a village close to Petit Mbao in the “Forest of Mbao”. On 6000 m² they grow vegetables, using property given by the government. 22 dedicated women, lead by Binta, work the land. Admirable self-confident women, who know that their produce is much better than imported fruit and vegetables. Since they support consumption of regional food, they also support climate protection by reducing emissions caused by transports.

The Naturefriends House – Maison des Amis de la Nature Alioune Diagne Mbor – is 18 km outside of Dakar and is well-connected to the city via the toll highway. It was opened in January 2004 and serves different purposes: Headquarters of the Senegalese Naturefriends organisation ASAN (Association Sénégalaise des Amis de la Nature), a training- and seminar centre and a guest house. As such, it offers rooms in the four bungalows (“huts”) and in the main house and can also fit bigger groups without a problem. The house is available for Naturefriends and other interested people who are working in the areas of sustainable development and tourism. ASAN’s tree nursery can be found in the garden.

“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”
Today, we share the last story from the Tour d’Horizon. At least for now.
Thanks to all the storytellers and photographers who let us have a glimpse into their last adventure!
Fiona shares with us her impressions:

If you are like me and are used to travelling on your own or with just one other person, then a group trip with about 40 people can be quite the challenge. However, we also experienced moments I would have never had alone. For example, planting trees. At the beginning, I was sceptical how that would turn out. But then I understood that it was the best part of this trip, …

The Fatalah game reserve is a popular destination for tourists travelling through the Saloum delta and day trips from The Gambia are possible as well. We learn a lot about the wild animals that used to be native in Senegal but can now only be found under “semi-wild” conditions in the reserve. The offer to take tame lions for a walk was rejected – as Naturefriends this is something we cannot support.

On two different days our two groups go on a trip through the delta area of the Saloum. A real “vacation day” in the breath-taking landscape. As a national park, the Saloum Delta has an interesting fish population and an impressive bird fauna. We are spending a long time on the Woudjering Island, have a picnic, go for a swim and listen to stories about life on the island. The owner of the island, Mamadou Diouf, created a humble paradise for him and his family, where he likes to greet guests and offers a picnic area, complete with tables and benches.
